Instead of slipping back inside, the Air Canada Jazz pilot was seen banging on the door and talking to his first officer on an internal phone.
Crew members were forced to take the door off its hinges to let him back in.
An airline spokeswoman said the first officer could have landed the flight by himself, and there had been no danger.

128 Students Suspended at Ind. School
Classrooms were a little less crowded at Morton High School on the first day of classes: 128 students were sent home for wearing the wrong clothes.
Fed up with inappropriate outfits, the principal suspended the students for one day Wednesday, minutes after doors opened at the school. Those suspended represent more than 10 percent of the 1,200 total students.
The offending attire _ including baggy pants, low-cut shirts, tank tops and graphic T-shirts _ are banned from classrooms. Students were also cited for cell phone use.
"This was the worst year I've seen in a long time," said Principal Theresa Mayerik. "It's gotten out of control, and we needed to send a message that we're not messing around."
The Hammond school usually has 20 dress code violations a day.
Mayerik said the infraction would be removed from students' records in 12 weeks if they had no other in-school violations.
School board members said they support Mayerik and the mass suspensions. "I'd be supportive if half the school was sent home, because 99 percent will get the message our schools are for education," board president Rebecca Ward said.

The Oscar-winning star will attend the premiere, along with director Steven Shainberg, at the opening gala.
It will be shown in the Santa Cecilia Hall at the Auditorium Parco della Musica on 13 October.
Kidman said: "I love Italy, a country with which I feel a great affinity, and I am proud to be present at the baptism of this important film-fest."

Xbox 360 to Include Wireless Accessories
With the next-generation console battle about to heat up for the holidays, Microsoft Corp. is hoping that going wireless will help draw in consumers to its Xbox 360 system.
The company announced wireless accessories Wednesday at the 2007 Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany. The new products include a camera for video chat and a racing wheel for driving video games.
The new Xbox Live Vision camera, available in the United States on Sept. 19, will let gamers see and talk with one another on Microsoft's Xbox Live online service
A $39.99 edition will include the camera, a headset for voice chat, a one-month subscription to the premium version of Xbox Live, as well free downloads of the video games "UNO" and "TotemBall" on Xbox Live Arcade. For $79.99, consumers get a 12-month subscription to Xbox Live and free downloads of "UNO" and "Robotron."
Coming in November is the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel. Designed for racing games, the $149.99 controller will include force feedback to simulate bumpy roads.
By the end of the year, the company also plans to sell a $59.99 wireless headset for voice chatting and a $19.99 wireless receiver so consumers can use the devices to play games on their Windows-based computers.
The new products come as rivals Sony Corp. and Nintendo Co. prepare to enter the next-generation video game market.
The PlayStation 3 from Sony, due Nov. 17, will have wireless controllers with built-in motion sensors but no force-feedback feature.

Tokyo's subway authority will allow a station advertisement featuring a nude and pregnant Britney Spears, officials said Thursday, dropping an earlier plan to censor the photo.
HB Japan Inc., publisher of the Japanese edition of Harper's Bazaar, plans to rent ad space at the posh Omotesando station next week to promote its October issue with Spears posing naked on the cover.
The ad, in which Spears bares her belly but covers her breasts with her hands, is the same one used in the August issue of the magazine's U.S. edition. The 24-year-old pop star is pregnant with her second child.
Tokyo Metro Co.'s obscenity screening team had initially raised objections to the nudity and asked HB Japan to modify the photograph during negotiations last month.
The publisher reluctantly agreed to blacken out the image from the waist down _ covering most of the singer's belly and thighs _ but had planned to write in the black space: "in this place we are not allowed to exercise the same level of freedom of expression as the original Harper's Bazaar."
But on Thursday, Tokyo Metro said it would allow full presentation of the photo as an exception to its obscenity rule, saying it understood the publisher's intention was to portray a happy mother _ not to be sexually explicit.
The magazine's deputy chief editor, Kayoko Higashino, welcomed the move. "I'm glad the subway officials understood the meaning of the photo," she said.
Before the reversal, Higashino had called the restriction "ridiculous," saying Spears would look "like a chubby woman" and not someone who is pregnant.
In principle, nudity is not accepted in ads in subway cars and stations, said Tokyo Metro spokesman Tatsuya Edakubo.
"Our earlier request to cover the photo from the waist down was because of nudity, not because we had anything against pregnant women," he said, adding that officials later decided that censoring the photo would be inappropriate.
The Omotesando display will include 50 posters for the fashion magazine, five of them of Spears.

Mayor Dick Hubbard said he would review local bylaws in a bid to prevent any more topless parades in Auckland.
"We do want a vibrant city (but) I think the parade does our image harm rather than good," Hubbard said.

Indian music's soulful maestro
Ustad Bismillah Khan was one of India's most prolific musicians, gaining worldwide acclaim for playing the shehnai for more than eight decades.
He was credited with helping the shehnai - a type of wind instrument - attain a higher status in Indian classical music and taking it to a world stage. It had earlier considered to be an accompanying instrument.

JCB car beats diesel speed record
A car built by JCB has broken the diesel engine land speed record after reaching 328.767mph (529km/h).
A JCB Dieselmax spokesman said the vehicle attained the average speed during two runs in Utah, USA.
Confirmation was given on Tuesday by the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile. An attempt to better the record will be made on Wednesday.
The Staffordshire-built vehicle was driven by Wing Cmdr Andy Green from RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire.

They apparently survived on a diet of rainwater, raw fish and seabirds. "We fished, and we ate the fish raw ... because there was no fire to cook with," Jesus Vidana, 27, told Mexico's Televisa news network.
